FMTTI Test Report Validity by Category (2018 Rules)
If you're planning around an FMTTI test report, the first thing to get straight is that validity is not the same for every machine. It depends on which category your equipment falls into, and whether you're looking at the Initial Commercial Test (ICT) or a subsequent Batch Test.
This was settled by a Technical Committee under DAC&FW (chaired by the DDG (Engg), ICAR) in a meeting on 10 August 2018, which fixed category-wise validity periods for ICT and Batch reports across the board. Here's the full table.

The counter-intuitive part
Most people assume tractors — the most complex, most heavily engineered machines in the whole lineup — would get the longest validity window. They don't. Tractors and power tillers have the shortest ICT validity of any category on the list: just 3 years, compared to 5 or 7 years for everything else.
Everything else — implements, plant protection equipment, post-harvest machinery, bullock-drawn tools — gets either 5 or 7 years on the ICT side. Tractors and power tillers sit alone at the bottom, at 3 years.
Why would that be, given tractors are subject to the most rigorous testing regime of the lot, including national type-approval through CFMTTI Budni? The Technical Committee's decision doesn't spell out a public rationale in the minutes — but the practical effect is clear: if you manufacture or import tractors or power tillers, your ICT clock runs out faster than for almost any other machinery category, and you need to plan your Batch Test renewal earlier than you might expect.
ICT vs Batch — what's the difference in practice
The Initial Commercial Test (ICT) is the first full test a new model goes through. Its validity is the number in the left-hand column above.
Once that period lapses, the manufacturer needs a Batch Test to keep the model's certification current. Notice that Batch Test validity is a flat 5 years across every single category — tractors, implements, harvesters, everything. The only variable is how long you get before that first Batch Test is due, and that's exactly where the ICT column matters.
So for a tractor or power tiller: 3 years on the ICT, then renew via Batch Test, and from there it's 5-year cycles going forward. For, say, a post-harvest machine: 7 years on the ICT before you even need to think about a Batch Test, then 5-year cycles after that.
What this means for planning
If you're a manufacturer with a tractor or power tiller model already in the field, don't assume you have the same runway as a competitor selling implements or post-harvest equipment. Mark the 3-year point on your calendar the day your ICT report is issued, not the day you notice it's getting old.
For everything downstream of the ICT — Batch renewals, scheme eligibility checks (SMAM, RKVY, PKVY, CHC), tender documentation — knowing exactly where your machine sits in this table avoids a scramble later. It's also worth confirming the current status of your specific report with your institute directly, since validity dates run from the report's issue date, not from a general category rule of thumb.
