"Power weeder" covers two common configurations sold in India: a center-rotary design, with the rotary blade unit mounted centrally under the machine between the engine and the operator, and a back-rotary design, with the rotary unit mounted at the rear. Both are self-propelled, walk-behind machines built around a small petrol or diesel engine, and — this is the detail worth knowing before you budget or plan a schedule — both are tested under the same FMTTI category. Blade position is a design and marketing choice, not a separate test regime, fee line, or validity rule.
What FMTTI testing costs
Power weeders share a fee line with power tiller-drawn/self-propelled reapers in the official testing-charge schedule, currently ₹1,21,961 for FY 2025-26, exclusive of GST. That figure is revised periodically — confirm the live rate with your target institute before committing to a budget.
There's no dedicated test standard — here's what fills the gap
No IS test code exists specifically for a self-propelled power weeder, regardless of whether it's a center-rotary or back-rotary design. Institutes fill that gap with the closest available standards: the Power Tiller test code (IS 9935) and its field-performance guidelines (IS 9980), the manually-operated rotary paddy weeder spec (IS 1976), and the rotavator blade spec (IS 6690) for checking rotor blade hardness and material. On top of those, a separate Ministry circular sets out power-weeder-specific critical technical specifications — a pass/fail checklist covering working width, blade thickness and hardness minimums, and required safety provisions like an emergency stop, a rotor shield, and a depth control mechanism.
What actually gets tested
Both configurations go through the same physical battery of tests: engine performance on a dynamometer, mechanical vibration at the handle and controls, noise at the operator's ear, turning ability, rotary blade hardness and chemical composition, full field performance (depth and width of cut, field efficiency, weeding efficiency), and a post-test teardown to inspect wear on the engine, blades and bearings against permissible limits. In real, published test reports we've reviewed, weeding efficiency and field efficiency have both landed anywhere from the high-60s to low-90s percent, depending on the specific machine and soil conditions — testing has also caught genuine issues in real cases, including blade thickness under the required minimum and blade material outside the specified composition.

In practice, manufacturers generally submit 5 units for a power weeder test — the regulations describe submitting a test sample rather than fixing one number for every case, so confirm the exact count with your target institute before shipping.
Report validity isn't fixed either: real Initial Commercial Test reports we've reviewed have carried validity periods of both 5 years and 7 years, depending on which Ministry circular was in force at the time of testing.
