How Long Does FMTTI Testing Take? Full Process Guide

Manufacturers ask this question constantly, and there's no single honest answer — because "how long does FMTTI testing take" really has two separate parts: the process steps themselves, and the queue you're standing in before those steps even start.

The 18-step workflow

Every FMTTI test now runs through the Agri-Machinery Portal, and it follows a fixed sequence:

  • You register on the portal and submit your application
  • Admin forwards it to the Sub-Admin for scrutiny
  • The Sub-Admin flags any discrepancies (after Admin sign-off)
  • You resubmit a corrected application
  • The Sub-Admin re-examines it
  • Admin approves the application and notifies you
  • You upload your fee receipt
  • Admin verifies the fee
  • The Sub-Admin randomly allocates a test officer and testing period
  • You send the equipment in for testing
  • Admin receives the equipment and assigns a Test Engineer
  • The Test Engineer runs the test, uploads intermediate results, and drafts the Draft Test Report (DTR)
  • Admin approves the DTR
  • You submit comments on the DTR
  • Admin forwards your comments to the Test Engineer
  • The Test Engineer reviews the comments and prepares the Final Test Report (FTR)
  • Admin reviews, approves and releases the FTR
  • You receive the FTR The system sends SMS and email alerts at every one of these stages, so at least you're never left guessing which step you're on.

Why the step count alone won't tell you the timeline

Notice something about that list: none of the 18 steps has a fixed number of days attached to it in the portal design. Some — scrutiny, fee verification, DTR approval — are administrative and can move quickly once someone is looking at your file. Others — the actual physical testing — depend entirely on when a test slot and engineer become free.

That's the real bottleneck. Step 9, the random allocation of a test officer and period, is where your file effectively joins a queue. How long you wait there has nothing to do with the 18-step process and everything to do with institute capacity at that moment.

Institute capacity is the real constraint

There are only four FMTTI institutes in the country — at Budni (Madhya Pradesh), Hisar (Haryana), Garladinne (Andhra Pradesh), and Biswanath Chariali (Assam) — each covering a defined region, plus CFMTTI Budni's additional national mandate for tractor type-approval. Beyond the four FMTTIs, there are 38 identified testing centres and 42 total approved testing bodies feeding into the system nationally. That's the entire capacity available to test every tractor, implement, and machine category going through scheme and subsidy approvals across India.

When an institute's backlog is light, your file can move through allocation and into an actual test bay reasonably fast. When it's backed up — which happens especially around scheme deadlines when everyone applies at once — the wait for step 9 stretches out regardless of how quickly you handled your own paperwork.

Sample size adds its own time

How much equipment you have to send in also affects how long the physical testing portion takes. The required sample size depends on your machine's cost bracket: machinery priced up to ₹35,000 requires 20 units, machinery from ₹35,000–₹1,00,000 requires 10 units, and machinery priced ₹1,00,000 and above requires 5 units. Combined harvesters need 3 units, and tractors, power tillers, and imported machinery each need 5 units. More units to run through field, endurance, and performance tests naturally means more testing time on the ground — separate from any queue delay.

What actually drives your realistic timeline

Put together, the honest answer is: the 18 steps themselves are mostly predictable and fast when your documentation is clean the first time round (which avoids the discrepancy-and-resubmission loop in steps 2–5). What's genuinely unpredictable is the wait for a test slot, driven by which institute you're assigned to, how backed up it currently is, and how many sample units your machine category requires.
