Which FMTTI Institute Covers Your State?

If you're trying to get a machine tested, the first practical question is: which institute do I actually send it to? India runs its farm machinery testing through a network of 4 regional FMTTIs, backed by a wider list of 38 identified testing centres under 42 approved testing bodies nationally. But the 4 FMTTIs are where most manufacturers end up, so it's worth knowing how they're divided.

CFMTTI — Budni, Madhya Pradesh

The Central Farm Machinery Training & Testing Institute sits in Budni, Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh, and has been running since 1955 — the oldest of the four. Its coverage isn't limited to central India: CFMTTI holds the national mandate for tractor type-approval and homologation, meaning it's the reference institute for tractors regardless of where in the country a manufacturer is based. If your machine is a tractor, CFMTTI is very likely part of the conversation even if you're not physically located anywhere near Madhya Pradesh.

NRFMTTI — Hisar, Haryana

The Northern Region FMTTI, established in 1963, is based in Hisar, Haryana, and serves the northern region of the country. If your operations are based in the north, this is typically your nearest and most relevant institute for non-tractor category testing, and often for tractors too depending on scheduling and load across the network.

SRFMTTI — Garladinne, Andhra Pradesh

The Southern Region FMTTI is located in Garladinne, Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, and has been operating since 1983. It covers the southern region. SRFMTTI is also notable for publishing its own detailed, itemised testing-charge schedules — for example, its power tiller Initial Commercial Test breakdown runs to 13 separate line items covering everything from specification checks to a 20-hour running-in period, brake and drawbar performance, noise, haulage, field testing and more.

NERFMTTI — Biswanath Chariali, Assam

The North Eastern Region FMTTI, the newest of the four (established 1990), is based in Biswanath Chariali, Assam, and covers the north-eastern region.

So which one is "yours"?

In practice, three things determine which institute handles your machine:

• Your region — northern, southern, north-eastern, or elsewhere — generally points you toward the matching regional FMTTI.
• Your machine category — tractors specifically route through CFMTTI Budni for type-approval, regardless of region.
• Capacity and scheduling — testing slots, backlog, and which institute currently has bandwidth for your category can shift where your test actually lands, even within the same region. Because the exact boundaries of "northern," "southern," and "north-eastern" coverage aren't rigid postcodes — and because tractor type-approval sits outside the regional split entirely — it's easy to guess wrong and lose weeks redirecting an application.
